Whiplash Compensation claims are a significant problem for insurers. Soft tissue neck injuries cost the insurance industry more than £1.6 billion a year. Researches are trying to manufacture cars that will reduce this amount. In particular passenger safety and rear end impacts are being studied.

The causes of whiplash and preventative counter measures are being studied by Allianz in Munich. As part of this they are calling for an international standard for head restraints and seats.

One of the most worrying trends emerging in the UK is the willingness of some members of the public to claims compensation even if they are not suffering, this fraud is increasing car insurance premiums.
