In our last article, we discussed the fact that the EU courts are trying to decide whether cheap female car insurance was sexual discrimination.
There are a number of reasons why female car insurance is cheaper. For example, men were responsible for 97% of convictions for dangerous driving between 1998-2002, this is a good indication that there is certainly a difference in the way that each sex drives and therefore it should be fare to use their gender as benchmark.
However, is it fair that regardless of a driving record that you should be penalised for something you can't change. Would it be fair that a woman gets paid less to do the same job just because she's a woman? Of course not, this is the main reason for the action being taken.
So what are the alternatives? Whatever action is taken, there's bound to be some people benefit and others who don't, it's important that a balance is found however. In our next article we intend to discuss some of the alternative methods of calculating female car insurance premiums.
