If your vehicle needs repair, it is recommended that you take it to an approved accident repair garage to speed up the repair process. These approved garages work closely with car insurance providers which cuts down on administration and can lead to faster repairs. Women's car insurance policies often cover the cost of removal of the vehicle to the nearest repair centre if the car is not in working order.
Hire cars are often available while the vehicle is in the garage to reduce the disruption to the insured drivers.
Once the details of the accident have been received someone from the car insurance company will visit the garage to assess the damage to the vehicle. They will make sure that the damage is consistent with the reports of the accident provided by you and then authorise the repairs if they are happy with the situation.
If the garage is not an approved repair centre, it may take longer for the assessor to visit as it is not likely to be on their daily rounds. Once the repairs are completed the car insurance company will pay the garage, less the excess which is payable by the policyholder.
If the damage to the car makes it "beyond economical repair" the car insurance company will make you an offer based on the cars MARKET VALUE, not what you insured it for. You are not obliged to accept this offer and can ask for it to be reconsidered should you believe the car to be worth more than the offer. If all else fails you have the right to take it to the insurance ombudsman who will try to resolve the matter.
